One more Slaty Skimmer dragonfly…

12 07 2016

One more Slaty Skimmer dragonfly shot…I usually like to diffuse the light when I can with my tri-grip diffuser (for more saturated color and even lighting on my subject), but sometimes the sunlight works in my favor. In this case, the sunlight illuminated my subject and my background…and the shallow depth of field renders the Sacred lotus leaves as glowing abstract shapes.

WEB Slaty skimmer glow

Here’s a little tip to achieve this bright punch of color in the background: I had my Nikon D800 with my Nikkor 105mm micro lens on a tripod and the peony framed and focused for my composition. I held my tri-grip translucent diffuser between the sun and the peony, but I let the background to the left be illuminated by the sun—that made the green pop against this hot pink peony. Sometimes I’ll diffuse the flower and the background but in this case, that background of lime green lit by the sun is just what I needed to make this image pop!

Bearded iris, unknown variety

Bearded iris (Iris germanica), photographed at Green Spring Gardens. The parking lot was my background (and I couldn’t have that!), so I improvised by using my white tri-grip diffuser as a background. Voila!
