Published! Talking Pictures column in Shutterbug Magazine

Barry Tanenbaum, who also profiled me for the NikonUsa.com website a few years ago (click here for that how-to article in their Learn & Explore series), wrote about the story behind my USPS Fern stamp series coming to fruition in his monthly column, Talking Pictures. Mediterranean Bells

Allium Bulgaricum (Nectaroscordum siculum), photographed at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, VA. This ornamental allium is easy to grow, deer-resistant, and hardy to zone 4. They thrive in sunlight and bloom in May and June. Also known as Mediterranean Bells, Sicilian Honey Lily, Ornamental Onion and Sicilian Garlic; native to the Mediterranean.

Blue False Indigo

Although it wasn’t identified with a plant marker at Green Spring Gardens, I’m pretty sure this is a Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis). This herbaceous perennial in the pea family grows 3-4 feet tall and features purple, lupine-like flowers blooming in spring. Its common name refers to the use of this plant by early Americans as a (lesser) substitute for true Indigo in making blue dyes.
